Periodontists are specialists in the field of dentistry who focus on the health of the gum, soft tissues, and bone around your teeth. They are experts in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease. Periodontal disease is an infection and inflammation of the gum and bone that hold your teeth in place and can lead to damage to your jaw, receding gums, and even tooth loss if left untreated. In addition to treating and preventing periodontal disease, periodontists may offer other oral health care services, such as dental implants, cosmetic gum surgery, and the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists evaluate each patient's oral health by assessing the gums and bone for signs of infection and inflammation. X-rays may also be taken to evaluate the overall health of the surrounding tissue and to detect changes in the bone around the teeth. Periodontists may then treat the condition with a range of techniques, such as scaling and root planing (using an ultrasonic device to remove plaque and tartar), use of antibiotics, and/or surgery. Periodontal treatments are designed to help control gum infection and restore gum health. Periodontists may also be involved in more cosmetic procedures, such as tooth shaping, gum grafting, reshaping of the gum line, and improving the appearance of teeth through the use of crowns, bridges, and veneers. In addition to these general procedures, periodontists can provide advice on proper brushing and flossing techniques, nutritional advice, and smoking cessation guidance. A periodontist may also make referrals to other dental professionals when needed. Ultimately, periodontists focus on the overall health of the gums and bones around the teeth. They work to keep teeth healthy and stable for the long term and the smile looking its best. If you have concerns about the health of your gums, a periodontist is a great choice to help diagnose and treat any periodontal issues.
