An orthodontist is a specialized dental professional who is trained to treat the correct alignment of teeth and jaws. The field of orthodontics encompasses diagnosis, prevention and correction of irregularities of the teeth, face, and related structures. Issues treated by an orthodontist include overcrowding of the teeth, spacing between the teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and incorrect jaw position. Orthodontic treatment is recommended when the dental problems prevent normal functioning in the mouth, such as chewing, normal cleaning of the teeth, and uncomfortable pressure andpain. This treatment may be done for both aesthetic and functional purposes, improving not only the appearance but also the health of the mouth. Orthodontic treatments used by orthodontists include dental braces, appliances that either attach to the teeth or tongue inorder to physically move them into a correct position, and headgear, another device used to move the teeth into the correct position. Other treatments such as retainers, which are used to prevent the teeth from moving back into their previousposition. Orthodontists have numerous educational training requirements to fulfill inorder to receive licensure. This includes a four year degree of dentistry and specialty residency program inorthodontics, which takes between two and three years to complete. Upon completion, the orthodontist must take board exams to gain certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. The foundation of orthodontic treatment is proper diagnosis. Following a complete oral examination, the dental records are reviewed and treatment plan individualized to the patients specific needs. Orthodontic treatment takes time to produce the desired result but with proper care and attention, patients should expect to achieve an improved appearance and function. The process of applying braces, aligners, and other treatments can often take one or two years, depending on the complexity of the case. There are numerousorthodontists practicing all over the world, offering a variety of treatments to correct teeth and jaw alignment issues. Selecting the right orthodontist for you is important, making sure that you are comfortable with the dentist and the procedure. Orthodontists can provide life changing results when used correctly and produce better dental hygiene in the long term, creating a healthy and functional smile.
