Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. This includes correcting improper jaw alignment and improving the general appearance and function of the teeth, mouth, and face. Orthodontic treatments have evolved drastically over the years, leading to improved outcomes and shorter treatment times for patients. To begin orthodontic treatments, a thorough evaluation of the patient’s dental and facial structure is performed. This evaluation includes taking X-rays, photographs, and clinical impressions to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for the individual. Some of the common treatments provided by orthodontists include traditional metal braces, lingual braces, ceramic braces, and clear aligners. Each type of appliance works to move teeth into the correct positions to achieve the desired results. In addition to fixing misaligned teeth, orthodontists may use various treatments to help improve the bite between the upper and lower teeth, known as malocclusion. They can also perform jaw correction and jaw surgery to correct jaw misalignment, as well as provide appliances to help improve facial structure and airway issues. Orthodontic treatments typically include periodic visits to the orthodontist to monitor the progress. During these visits, adjustments may be made to ensure that the teeth remain in the correct positions during treatment. Upon completion of treatment, the individual will be given a set of instructions to maintain the results, such as avoiding certain foods and the use of a retainer to keep the teeth in their proper positions. Orthodontic treatment can provide a variety of benefits, including improved oral health, enhanced facial attractiveness, improved self-esteem, and improved bite and jaw joint function. By working closely with the patient, an orthodontist can create a customized treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcomes.
