Mouth Wash

Mouth Wash

Mouth wash is an important part of an effective oral health care regimen. It is often used to help reduce tooth decay, plaque buildup, bad breath, and even gum disease. Mouth wash using right ingredients can deliver a powerful punch to fighting off the bacteria and free radicals that can cause oral health problems. Mouth wash is a mucosal cleansing composition that helps to reduce the number of oral bacteria present. It does this by either destroying bacterial cells, interfering with bacterial growth, or inhibiting the acids produced by bacteria. The active ingredients in mouth wash vary but most include antiseptics, such as hydrogen peroxide, thymol, menthol, eucalyptol, chlorhexidine gluconate, and cetylpyridinium chloride. In addition, some products contain fluoride, which is known to help reduce the incidence of cavities. Mouth wash should be used in conjunction with other oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing. This ensures that the mouthwash's active ingredients reach areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush and floss. For instance, when brushing and flossing cannot reach the back of your tongue, mouthwash can help reduce bacteria in that area. When selecting a mouthwash for use in oral health care, look for one that is alcohol-free or contains a low concentration of alcohol. Alcohol-containing mouthwashes can dry out the mouth and make it more susceptible to bacterial growth. If your mouthwash contains fluoride, be sure to use it in moderation, as too much fluoride can cause discoloration of the teeth. In addition, look for a mouthwash that contains some antimicrobial and antifungal agents, such as chlorhexidine gluconate and cetylpyridinium chloride, to help reduce the risk of gum disease and cavities. Finally, when shopping for a mouthwash, check that the product is accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the British Dental Association (BDA). These organizations test mouthwashes and certify them if they meet their guidelines. To sum up, mouthwash can be an effective part of a dental health care regimen. Be sure to select one with active ingredients that are appropriate for your needs and to always follow the directions of your dentist for best results.
