Dental Hygienists are some of the most important members within the dental science workforce. They are essential for oral health and play a significant role in the dental health of an individual. In their role, dental hygienists are responsible for providing primary preventative dental care for patients of all ages. Before carrying out any treatments, such as tooth cleaning, they must first observe and evaluate the patients’ overall oral health condition. Once they have analyzed the condition of the patient’s teeth and gums, they are then able to take the appropriate steps in preventing and augmenting dental health. Through providing primary preventative care, dental hygienists are responsible for conducting timely and thorough check-ups. During evaluations, they must assess the patient’s tooth and gum health, and look for cavities and other signs of periodontal diseases or disorders. Additionally, the hygienist must thoroughly clean the teeth in order to remove any plaque build-up. If necessary, they may provide other treatments such as scaling, root planing, and polishing, among others. Besides solely providing preventative and restorative dental care, dental hygienists may also educate their patients on proper oral hygiene practices. Therefore, as a part of their job, the hygienist must explain the importance of brushing and flossing teeth on a regular basis. They must also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as have the patient practice them. Additionally, hygienists are responsible for counseling their patients about healthy eating habits and its effects on their dental health. Overall, dental hygienists are an essential part of the field of dental science. Their primary role is to provide preventative dental care and optimum oral hygiene through monitoring, diagnosing, and treating gum and tooth diseases. Furthermore, they aim to help patients maintain quality oral health through educating them on proper oral hygiene practices.
