Dental education is the process of providing dental students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to practice dentistry. It is the responsibility of dental schools to ensure that their students have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice dental care safely and effectively. Dental education begins with the fundamentals of oral anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiography, and pharmacology. Once these initial topics are mastered, students move onto more advanced topics such as esthetics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, and oral surgery. During their training, students participate in clinical rotations and gain hands-on experience in various dental procedures. In order to become a successful dental professional, students must also develop a thorough understanding of public health and legal regulations, patient management, and ethical principles. In addition, it is important for students to understand the importance of communication and teamwork in the dental office. Dental schools strive to provide students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for the challenges associated with the practice of dentistry. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, many schools offer courses in patient care, interpersonal skills, and practice management. These courses are designed to help students develop the skills needed to provide effective and compassionate care. To ensure that students are adequately prepared to practice dentistry, many dental schools require their students to complete the National Board Dental Examination. The NDBE is designed to evaluate a student’s knowledge and skills in the areas of basic sciences, clinical sciences, and dental practice. Upon successful completion of the NDBE, students receive a certification of competency and are eligible to apply for a license to practice dentistry. Dental education is a key component of the dental profession and is essential for the delivery of quality dental care. Dental schools strive to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice dentistry safely and effectively.
