Cavity fillings are an important part of maintaining good oral health. They prevent further damage to the tooth due to bacterial infections, decayed or broken parts in the enamel, and other issues. Fillings are usually made from a variety of materials, depending on the situation and the patient’s needs. A dentist first inspects the affected area of the tooth and determines what type of filling material is needed based on the size, shape, and depth of the cavity. If the cavity is very deep, your dentist might recommend a metal filling, such as gold or amalgam, as they usually last longest. If a cavity is shallow or in an area of the mouth that can be easily seen, your dentist may prefer a tooth-colored filling, such as composite resin. When it comes to placing a filling, your dentist will use either a laser or drill to remove the damaged parts of the tooth and create a clean surface for the filling material. An anesthetic may be used to help reduce any pain or discomfort, and the filling material is filled into the cavity and hardened in place. Afterwards, the dentist will make sure that the filling fits snugly and is free of edges or rough surfaces and may shape the material for a more comfortable fit. It is important to remember that fillings do not last forever and may need to be replaced with time. To prevent future cavities or the need for future fillings, it’s best to maintain good oral hygiene habits such as brushing twice a day, flossing, using mouthwash, and seeing your dentist at least twice a year. Doing this can help your teeth stay strong and healthy well into the future.
