Title: Rationale to consider either orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery
Abstract:
A common mistake in orthodontics, is to plan a treatment of an orthodontic case that has a skeletal malocclusion in sagittal, vertical or transverse plane by camouflaging; and if it fails then the patient is referred to the Orthognathic department. This will result in a complete failure of the orthodontic case in terms of space closure, crown inclination, torque and a long-term retention of the treatment.
There are reference points and landmarks on the patient profile and on his cephalometric X-ray that can aid in determining whether the patient is going to have orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery.
There are significant protocols, orthodontist should have in consideration during treatment planning, if the final decision is to avoid orthognathic surgery, and the camouflaging treatment will be considered, then we have to make compensation for the final result; or if orthognathic surgery has been planned then sometimes, we need to make a decompensation in our treatment.
Methods of review: Case study of class II and Class III patients in need for orthognathic surgeries but their decision was to avoid it, and to be treated orthodontically

- Audience will understand the important factors in determining their treatment plan
- They will be able to apply high quality of orthodontic treatment after their proper analysis
