Title: Diagnosis and management of burning mouth syndrome
Abstract:
Burning mouth syndrome is the medical term for ongoing or recurring burning in the mouth without an obvious cause. Burning mouth syndrome can include a burning feeling in the tongue, lips, gums, throat, or roof of the mouth. Other symptoms may be thirst, a dry mouth, a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth, loss of taste and mouth tingling, stinging or numbness. Burning mouth syndrome usually comes on suddenly, but it can develop slowly over time.Often the specific cause can't be found. The frequency of symptoms can vary widely, from all day every day to sporadic. The feeling of burning can be severe, as if you injured your mouth with a very hot drink.Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a clinical diagnosis made via the exclusion of all other causes. No universally accepted diagnostic criteria, laboratory tests, imaging studies or other modalities definitively diagnose or exclude burning mouth syndrome (BMS).
