Title: The role of vitamins and nutritional supplements in Temporomandibular Joint disorders (TMDs) among Yemeni population

Abstract:

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) represent a common group of musculoskeletal conditions that affect jaw function, cause chronic pain, and reduce quality of life. Global evidence suggests that nutritional deficiencies, Particularly in vitamins and supplements such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D3, Calcium, Magnesium, B-complex vitamins, Turmeric (Curcumin), Vitamin C, and Vitamin E, may contribute to joint and muscle dysfunction. In Yemen, widespread malnutrition and limited dietary diversity may increase the risk and severity of TMDs, yet no studies have explored this association. This research aims to investigate the relationship between vitamin and supplement intake and the prevalence and severity of TMDs among Yemeni patients. A case-control study will be conducted in selected dental clinics, including TMD patients (cases) and healthy individuals (controls). Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, clinical examinations based on RDC/TMD criteria, and laboratory investigations for selected nutrients. Statistical analyses, including logistic regression, will be applied to determine associations between deficiencies and TMD risk. The expected outcomes include the identification of key nutritional deficiencies linked to TMD in Yemen, evidence-based recommendations for nutritional interventions, and the potential integration of supplementation strategies into dental and musculoskeletal
healthcare. This study will be the first of its kind in Yemen, bridging a critical gap in the literature and offering practical insights for patient care and public health policy.
