Title: Managing endodontic complications: A risk based approach

Abstract:

Endodontic treatment is a routine procedure in dental practice, yet it remains associated with a wide range of potential complications that can compromise treatment outcomes if not properly anticipated and managed. Many of these complications are not random events but are closely linked to identifiable risk factors related to tooth anatomy, case complexity, patient condition, and clinical decision-making. This presentation discusses common endodontic complications through a risk-based approach, focusing on understanding why these complications occur and how they can be prevented or managed effectively. Key intra-operative and post-operative challenges, such as missed canals, instrument separation, perforations, and post-treatment flare-ups, are explored in relation to case assessment and treatment planning. Emphasis is placed on the importance of recognising high-risk cases early, modifying treatment strategies accordingly, and making timely referral decisions when necessary. Rather than focusing solely on technical solutions, this session highlights the role of clinical judgement, risk awareness, and decision-making in improving patient safety and treatment predictability. By adopting a risk-based mindset, dental practitioners can reduce the incidence of endodontic complications, enhance treatment outcomes, and provide safer, more responsible care in everyday clinical practice.
