Title: Joint care for patients with learning disabilities requiring sedation and general anaesthesia: A multidisciplinary case series

Abstract:

Background: People with learning disabilities often experience significant barriers to accessing dental care due to complex medical, behavioural, communication, and social needs. Special Care Dentistry plays a pivotal role in reducing oral health inequalities through the provision of personalised care, reasonable adjustments, and access to sedation and general anaesthesia where required. Successful treatment frequently depends on close collaboration between dental, medical, anaesthetic, and support services.
Case Series: This presentation describes a series of patients with learning disabilities managed within a hospital-based Special Care Dentistry service. The cases highlight the challenges encountered when providing dental treatment to individuals with complex needs and demonstrate how a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) approach facilitated safeand effective care. Joint working between Special Care Dentistry, anaesthetic teams, medical specialists, community services, carers, and family members supported comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, and delivery of care. The cases illustrate the importance of individualised care pathways, reasonable adjustments, behavioural management strategies, and the appropriate use of sedation and general anaesthesia to meet patient needs.
Conclusion: The management of patients with learning disabilities extends beyond clinical dental treatment and requires coordinated multidisciplinary care. This case series demonstrates how collaborative working can improve access to dental services, overcome barriers to treatment, and optimise patient outcomes. The cases emphasise the value of integrated care pathways and patient-centred approaches in delivering equitable oral healthcare for individuals with complex needs.
