Title: Beyond the drill: Artificial intelligence and the next era of conservative dentistry
Abstract:
Background: The field of dentistry is undergoing a transformative shift from experience-based interventions to data-driven precision care. This presentation explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) serves as a catalyst for 4P Medicine—Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, and Participatory redefining conservative dentistry by addressing total patient health rather than just isolated dental issues.
Methodology: The core of this evolution is a four-layer AI architecture that integrates multimodal data, including 2D/3D radiographs, intraoral scans, Electronic Health Records (EHRs), and microbiome (omics) data. By utilizing deep learning and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), AI converts static images into dynamic diagnostic intelligence, providing objective evidence for clinical judgment.
Clinical Applications: AI transitions the clinic from a "Wait and Watch" approach to "Early Intervention and Precision Preservation". Key applications include superior sensitivity in identifying early enamel demineralization, automated evaluation of secondary caries at restoration margins, and predictive modeling for the longevity of minimally invasive interventions.
The Oral-Systemic Link: A critical focus is the role of AI in mapping the "dysbiosis cascade" to systemic conditions. Chronic oral infections are linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and neurodegenerative diseases. AI-driven multi-omics integration allows clinicians to treat a carious tooth as a medical data point for cardiovascular and neuro-protection.
Conclusion: Integrating AI in conservative dentistry empowers clinicians to achieve a higher standard of precision care. By stabilizing the oral microbiome, dentists play an essential role in stabilizing systemic health, moving beyond the drill to safeguard total well-being.
